At Nonpareil K9, "nonpareil" means "having no equal"—and that's exactly what we strive to provide: unmatched expertise, honest communication, and training results that last.
Our Background & Experience
With over 9 years of professional dog training experience, we've worked with hundreds of dogs across every breed, age, temperament, and behavioral challenge imaginable. From 8-week-old puppies learning their first commands to aggressive adult dogs requiring intensive behavioral rehabilitation, we've seen it all—and we've learned what actually works in the real world.
Our training foundation is built on:
Sport Dog Training: We train and compete in Competitive Dog Sports including Mondio Ring with our own German Shepherds, disciplines that demand precision obedience, controlled protection work, and rock-solid temperament. This high-level experience translates directly to better training for pet dogs.
Balanced Training Methodology: We studied under professional trainers who emphasize clarity, fairness, and results—not trends or philosophies that sound good but don't deliver.
Thousands of Hours of Hands-On Work: Every dog teaches us something. We don't rely on theory—we rely on what we've proven works across breeds, ages, and temperaments.
Why We Chose Balanced Training Over Purely Positive Methods
We didn't start our careers as balanced trainers. Like many, we began with purely positive methods because they seemed kind, modern, and "humane." But when we encountered dogs with serious behavioral issues—leash reactivity, aggression, anxiety—we saw the limitations.
Dogs weren't becoming more confident with treat-based training alone. They were becoming more confused because no one was giving them clear boundaries. Owners were frustrated because their dogs "knew" the commands but wouldn't listen outside the kitchen.
That's when we transitioned to balanced training. Not because we wanted to be "harsher," but because we wanted to be more honest and more effective. We learned that dogs thrive when they understand the rules clearly, when consequences are fair and timely, and when structure creates freedom.
Now, we specialize in helping the dogs that purely positive trainers often can't—the reactive dogs, the aggressive dogs, the high-drive dogs that need accountability, not just cookies.
What Sets Us Apart From Other Trainers
1. We're Honest About Limitations
We won't promise to "fix" every dog—genetics, temperament, and bite history have limits
We'll tell you if your dog needs a vet behaviorist, not just more training
We're upfront about realistic timelines and outcomes
2. We Train Dogs for the Real World, Not Just the Living Room
Your dog won't just sit in your kitchen—they'll sit at the park, at the vet, and around distractions
Off-leash reliability around squirrels, other dogs, and running children
Training that holds up when life gets messy
3. We Use All Four Quadrants of Learning (Not Just One)
Positive reinforcement for motivation and relationship-building
Negative reinforcement (leash pressure) for spatial guidance
Positive punishment (fair corrections) for accountability
Negative punishment (removing rewards) for poor choices
This creates clarity, not confusion
4. We Prioritize Structure and Leadership Over Entertainment
Dogs don't need constant play and freedom—they need rules and structure
Boundaries create confidence; permissiveness creates anxiety
We teach owners how to be fair leaders, not just treat dispensers
Our Facility & Training Environment
Your dog doesn't train in a kennel—they train in a structured home environment with our professional trainers. This means:
Real-world distractions (household activity, doorbell, other animals)
Structured downtime (crate training, place training, calm settling)
Daily public outings (pet stores, parks, busy streets)
Controlled socialization with stable dogs (when appropriate)
This immersive approach ensures that training transfers to your home, not just our facility.

At Nonpareil K9, we practice balanced dog training—a science-based approach that utilizes all four quadrants of operant conditioning to create clear, fair communication between you and your dog. Unlike purely positive training methods that rely solely on food rewards, or heavy-handed compulsion training that uses excessive force, our balanced approach gives dogs the clarity they need to make correct decisions confidently.
What is Balanced Dog Training?
Balanced dog training recognizes that dogs learn from both rewards and consequences, just like they do in nature. We use:
Positive Reinforcement (rewarding good behavior with food, toys, play, and praise)
Negative Reinforcement (removing leash pressure when the dog complies)
Positive Punishment (adding a consequence for non-compliance, like a verbal "NO" marker or brief leash correction)
Negative Punishment (removing rewards when the dog makes poor choices)
This isn't about being harsh—it's about being honest. Dogs already experience all four quadrants whether we acknowledge it or not. The question isn't if your dog will encounter consequences, but who will deliver them and how clearly. We believe it's our job to provide fair, consistent communication so your dog understands the rules before consequences are applied.
Structure Creates Freedom
Our philosophy is simple: structure creates freedom. A dog that understands clear rules and boundaries is a dog that can be trusted off-leash at the park, can go anywhere with you, and doesn't live in constant anxiety about what's allowed. Clarity eliminates confusion. Fair consequences create confident decision-making.
We're not heavy-handed trainers who use fear and intimidation. We're also not purely positive trainers who avoid accountability and leave dogs confused about expectations. We're fair trainers who believe dogs deserve honest, clear communication—and that means using both rewards and appropriate consequences.
Why Choose Balanced Training Over Purely Positive Methods?
Purely positive training works beautifully for teaching new behaviors in controlled environments. But when you need:
Off-leash reliability around distractions (squirrels, other dogs, running children)
Behavioral modification for aggression, reactivity, or anxiety
Real-world obedience that works in your home, at the vet, at the park, and on vacation
Safety for dogs with high prey drive or protection instincts
...you need a training approach that includes accountability, not just cookies.
Balanced training isn't about punishing dogs—it's about preparing them to handle the real world with confidence and clarity.
Serving Asheboro, Greensboro, Raleigh, Fayetteville, Charlotte, and Central North Carolina with professional balanced dog training, e-collar training, and behavior modification programs.

At Nonpareil K9, we specialize in behavior modification training for dogs with serious behavioral issues. Our 9+ years of experience working with reactive dogs, aggressive dogs, and anxious dogs has taught us one critical truth: addressing the root cause of the behavior creates real change, not just temporary management.
Behavioral Issues We Successfully Treat:
Leash Reactivity & Barrier Frustration
Dog-to-Dog Aggression
Fear-Based Aggression Toward Humans
Human-Directed Aggression
Separation Anxiety & Destructive Behavior
Prey Drive & Chasing Behaviors
Excitability & Impulse Control Issues
Behavioral Issues That Require Additional Support:
Severe Separation Anxiety with Medical Component
Genetic Nerve Issues & Temperament Problems
Aggression Rooted in Medical Pain
Our "Can't vs. Won't" Philosophy
This distinction is critical to fair training:
CAN'T = The dog doesn't understand what you're asking, is physically incapable, or is experiencing fear/pain
Our Response: Help, guide, teach, build confidence—NEVER correct for lack of understanding
WON'T = The dog understands perfectly but chooses not to comply
Our Response: Fair, timely consequence to establish accountability—this is how dogs learn boundaries
Many behavioral issues stem from confusion, not defiance. Our job is to provide clarity first, then accountability second.
Does your dog struggle with reactivity, aggression, or anxiety? We specialize in behavior modification for dogs in Asheboro, Greensboro, Raleigh, Fayetteville, Charlotte, and throughout Central North Carolina.

Our Board & Train programs provide intensive, immersive training where your dog lives with us for 3, 5, or 7 weeks. This is the fastest, most effective way to transform your dog's behavior—but it requires your commitment to maintaining the training after your dog comes home.
What Makes Our Board & Train Different?
Unlike trainers who kennel dogs in sterile facilities, your dog lives in a structured home environment with our professional trainers. They experience real-world training scenarios daily: practicing obedience around distractions, learning home manners, and generalizing behaviors across multiple environments.
We don't just "train your dog and send them home." We train your dog, then train you to maintain the results.
The Training Process: What Happens While Your Dog is With Us
Daily Training Schedule:
2-3 formal training sessions (15-30 minutes each)
Multiple real-world exposure opportunities (public outings, socialization, environmental proofing)
Structured downtime (crate rest, place training, calm enrichment)
Exercise and play (mental stimulation is prioritized over physical exhaustion)
Environmental Exposure:
Pet-friendly stores (Tractor Supply, Home Depot, local shops)
Parks, trails, and outdoor spaces
Busy parking lots, sidewalks, and public areas
Around livestock, wildlife, and other dogs (at appropriate distance)
Communication During Training:
Video updates showing progress
Phone calls to discuss behavior changes or concerns
Photos in our private client group
The Handoff: Teaching YOU to Maintain Results
This is the most critical part of any Board & Train program. Your dog will be trained to a high level, but you must learn how to handle them properly to maintain results.
What Handoff Training Includes:
How to use the communicate correctly (timing, clarity, fairness)
Marker timing and command delivery
How to read your dog's body language and arousal levels
Troubleshooting common challenges
When to reward vs. when to correct
Realistic expectations for ongoing maintenance
Post-Program Maintenance Requirements:
Daily 10-15 minute training sessions for the first 30 days
Weekly structured outings to proof behaviors
Consistent rule enforcement at home
Follow-up sessions if regression occurs
Is Board & Train Right for Your Dog?
Board & Train is BEST for:
Busy owners who can't commit to daily training sessions
Dogs with serious behavioral issues requiring intensive work
Owners wanting fastest possible results
Dogs that need off-leash reliability
Private Lessons May Be Better for:
Owners who want to be hands-on in the training process
Puppies under 4 months old
Dogs with severe separation anxiety
Budget-conscious owners willing to invest more time
Our Success Guarantee
We don't guarantee perfection—we guarantee effort, honesty, and maximum improvement within your dog's genetic and temperament limitations. If your dog doesn't show significant progress by week 3, we'll have an honest conversation about next steps, which may include adjusting the program, extending the timeline, or referring to a veterinary behaviorist.
Most dogs succeed. The ones that don't usually have underlying medical or genetic issues beyond what training can address.
